This opinion piece is by Marian E. Hopkins, Senior Director at the Business Roundtable. A couple of weeks ago, President Obama met with Business Roundtable's member CEOs, and his speech reminded me of the "space race" of the 21st century - the development and deployment of green energy technology - something I recently discussed on Treehugger. read more »

In Plan B 4.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization, I have presented a plan to dramatically reduce carbon emissions by increasing energy efficiency and replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy. In the push to reduce emissions, all eyes are on China, the world's most populous country and now also the world's top carbon emitter. Here are some highlights from the Plan B 4.0 datasets on China's energy economy:

The red band tells it all: it is the percentage of those who say that they "believe the action is important, but do not currently engage in it." The blue band represents those who "believe the action is important and currently engage in it. The Greys believe the action is unimportant and don't do it. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger read more »

Securities & Exchange Commission Issues Climate Guidance - Setting Stage For "Summer of Carbon"

Thursday, 28 January, 2010 - 12:10

The 5-member SEC has issued guidance for corporate reporting of financial risk associated with climate change. The guidance is less about long term costs of a factory being flooded out along the Houston Ship Canal, for example, and more about near term costs of concern to investors. (Do any investors pay attention to the long view?) Examples: estimating and reporting GHG-e emissions; having to buy carbon credits or change production processes to stay within a carbon emissions "cap;" the costs of potentially being sued, and so on. The EPA is taking steps toward climate change mitigation by requesting grant applications for activities that promote methane emission reductions. Five million dollars in grant money was recently made available to U.S. and international organizations to promote climate change mitigation programs. Is this a step up from the Bush Administration?...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Jericho in Palestine will light up with solar power thanks to Japanese initiative.

The Japanese government has agreed to assist the Palestinian Authority with two solar energy projects totaling $23 million, according to the Palestinian Maan News Agency.

Part of the funds, $16.7 million, will be used to assist in alleviating the Authority’s financial difficulties, with the remaining $6.3 million going to construct a photovoltaic solar energy plant in Jericho, just above the Dead Sea. read more »

UN Reportedly Asks Delegates to Extend Their Stays
President Obama offered the Copenhagen summit a curt, no-nonsense summary of the challenges still facing the conference, and emphasized he's here to act, but offered no new commitments. Following an impromptu meeting between Obama and 20 heads of state (Canada was inexplicably absent) and a testy, rousing address by Brazilian President Lula de Silva, Obama's speech sounded tones of urgency (over the crisis) and impatience (over continued sticking points like China's transparency and the decades-long negotiating process).

The speech -- which ...Read the full story on TreeHugger read more »

Image: CNN Show Me the Data One of the challenges of the modern world is to turn plentiful raw data into useful insights. GapMinder is particularly good at that, but they're not the only ones working on tools to allow experts and non-experts alike to manipulate and explore data. I found one of those tools on CNN, and I thought they did a good job. Using a slider, you can see the growth of global energy consumption split by region (North-America, Asia, Europe, Middle-East, etc), the growth of renewable energy production (compare the s...Read the full story on TreeHugger
